SMS 2026 (21-23.10.2026, Seville, Spain)

Focused session at the SMS 2026

The 11th edition of the Smart Materials and Surfaces (SMS 2026) will bring together, from 21st to 23rd October 2026 in Seville (Spain), experts from academia and industry to exchange insights on solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges, from healthcare to climate change, and advanced material design.

The conference, organised by SETCOR, will connect researchers across 6 specialized sessions covering from Quantum Nanomaterials to Bio-medical Surfaces, and will offer the room for strategic networking and build partnerships with delegates from international industry leaders and top-tier universities.

The SSbD4CheM project will have a focused session entitled “Integrating Evidence-Based Environmental and Safety Assessment into SSbD: Methodologies and Case Studies”, that will explore how evidence-based environmental assessment can be effectively integrated into Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) workflows. It will present the methodologies and approaches applied within the SSbD4CheM project to assess environmental and safety aspects and support informed decision-making throughout the design process. The session will also showcase how these approaches are being implemented in the project’s case studies (textile, automotive and cosmetics), highlighting practical experiences, challenges and lessons learned. Together, the contributions will demonstrate how environmental evidence can strengthen SSbD assessments and support the development of safer and more sustainable chemicals and materials.

Co-organising BPP2026 (6-9.09.2026, Beld, Slovenia)

SSbD workshop & booth at the BPP2026

The Biopartitioning and Purification Conference (BPP 2026) will bring together, from 6^th to 9^th September 2026 in Bled (Slovenia), experts from academia and industry to exchange insights on the latest advances in bioseparation, purification, and sustainable bioprocessing.

The conference will explore emerging topics including AI-driven process optimisation, biomass processing and waste valorisation, novel bioproducts, life cycle assessment, and regulatory frameworks. Through keynote lectures, presentations, posters, round-table discussions, and networking, BPP 2026 will provide a good platform for sharing knowledge, showcasing innovations, and building new collaborations for the future of sustainable bioprocessing.

The BPP2026 is co-organised by the SSbD4CheM project. Together with our sister project TOXBOX we are organising on September 9^th a SSbD workshop entitled “REGULATORY AND SUSTAINABILITY CONSIDERATIONS”.

The plenary speaker of the workshop will be Barry Hardy, from Edelweiss Connect, with a talk on “SSbD for bio-based innovation: Integrating scientific evidence, digital technologies and human-AI collaboration”.
Uroš Novak, from NIC, will also give an oral presentation on the cosmetic case study, entitled “Implementing a SSbD Framework for nanocellulose-enhanced cosmetics formulations”.

In the “Projects Fair”, SSbD4CheM is also having a booth full of showcase materials of our automotive, textile and cosmetic case studies, presented by Beatriz Alfaro Serrano (BNN):

automotive interior parts made of lightweight lignocellulosic natural-based fillers (Stellantis, Wood K plus)
PFAS-free bio-based coatings (textiles) with hydrophobic, self-cleaning, and antimicrobial properties (KORTEKS, NOVEX)
nanoplastics-free cosmetics: face cream, SPF lotion, facial mud mask (AHAVA Dead Sea Laboratories, NIC)

will be conducting a specialized training session on the EU Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) Framework at the SETAC Europe 35th Annual Meeting in Vienna. Taking place on Sunday, 11 May 2025, this half-day course will provide professionals with practical knowledge to align their work with the sustainability objectives of the European Green Deal.
