The 1st edition of Nanochemistry Camp, organised jointly by the I.S.E.O. Institute and the University of Brescia, was an international residential summer school aimed at master’s and doctoral students in chemistry and allied fields, where nanochemistry played a key role.
Between 21 and 28 September 2024, the camp attracted approx. 30 students and offered top-tier, cutting-edge insights on key topics in nanochemistry. With a unique and innovative format, it brought together students and world-renowned experts in (nano)chemistry, including Nobel laureates, in a relaxed and informal setting at a stunning campsite overlooking Lake Iseo.
In addition, participants had the chance to meet the holder of a Nobel prize (Andre Geim, The University of Manchester, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2010), as he was one of the renown speakers at the conference.
Xiaoyu Zhang from VITO attended the camp because it offered a good opportunity to present the project to other researchers and also a wonderful chance to learn from other scientist. In her poster titled “Nanocellulose: Characterisation and Environmental Behaviour“, she presented her current and future work with nanocellulose, her motivation to carry out this study and the next steps to achieve her goal of determining physicochemical properties of nanocellulose, as well as reaching the risk assessment of released nanocellulose through experiments that simulate environmental conditions. To characterise nanocellulose, different analytical techniques are needed to know the properties of nanocellulose. To understand the environmental behaviour of nanocellulose, experiments will be carried out to mimic the real environment.
