On 14 October 2024, our colleagues from Wood K plus organised a scientific symposium on the topic “Circularity in bio-based materials”. The event took place in Linz (Austria) and gathered about 70 participants from the scientific community, RTO’s, as well as industry and network representatives, interested in getting up-to-date insights on framework conditions, specifications, strategies, etc. related to material- and process-related R&D activities, to deepen into the development of new innovative cycles, including new business and application areas.
The presentations discussed a variety of topics: pure R&D activities such as policies, EU and national strategies, (social) life cycle assessment, Safety and Sustainability by Design (SSbD), living architecture, engineered living materials, reclaimed wood, harnessing water for sustainable material synthesis and processing, and bio-economy in Latin America.
Clemens Wolf, from BNN, gave an oral presentation on the symposium. Under the title “Enhancing Awareness and Implementation of Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD)”, he provided insight into the implementation of safe-and-sustainable-by-design (SSbD) strategies, with an introduction to the SSbD4CheM project.
Clemens emphasised how SSbD principles are key to bridging the gap between the rapid pace of technological innovation and the evolution of the related regulatory frameworks. By proactively addressing potential risks and societal impacts, SSbD ensures that innovation proceeds responsibly. He also addressed the importance of integrating safety and sustainability early in the development process. This approach not only aligns innovation with societal values and regulatory requirements, but also fosters a more resilient and adaptable governance framework. Clemen’s presentation highlighted SSbD as a critical tool for achieving a sustainable and responsible future in the face of rapid technological advancements.
