On 14 September 2024, as part of Slovenia’s Cleaning Action “Clean Coasts” (Čista obala), linked to the International Coastal Cleanup, our colleagues from the Slovenian’s National Institute of Chemistry (NIC) organized a special workshop “Secrets of Plastic” aimed at raising awareness among young people about plastic pollution and potential solutions. The workshop welcomed children to actively engage in the classification of plastic waste. It took place in the Strunjan adjunct area and closeby coast.
The highlight of the workshop was an interactive presentation by Ondrej Panak (NIC), entitled “Skrivnosti plastike” (Secrets of Plastics). The 15 interested children participating in the workshop learned about the omnipresent issue of plastic waste. Ondrej revealed surprising instances of plastic in daily life, such as in cosmetic products, and shared the initiatives and projects NIC is involved in to combat this problem. Additionally, he presented the SSbD4CheM project, emphasizing the importance of its cosmetic case study as part of NIC’s broader commitment to addressing plastic pollution.
